María Gallegos was born and raised in the beautiful Red Earth mountains of rural San Miguel county. She is the second eldest of nine siblings. Her family owns a farm in Puerto de Luna, NM.
María comes to the New Mexico Acequia Association with experience in community, labor and political organizing; environmental science and policy/advocacy work in social justice. María was hired as our Program and Development Coordinator where she will provide overall support to NMAA programs, including work on Acequia Governance and Organizing projects. María will also play a key role in Development and Fundraising.
In her spare time María enjoys reading Xicana/Xicano and Working Class Women's Literature; writing poetry, farming, discussing politics and history and teaching Ballet Folklorico. She is a proud mama of a beautiful, gifted musician.
