Position Summary: The NMAA is seeking a person who is passionate about acequias, water, food, and culture to serve as our Acequia Outreach Coordinator. This person will serve the statewide acequia community with education, outreach, and technical assistance on water rights, water management, acequia governance, infrastructure planning, financial compliance, easements, and a variety of concerns that acequias face as local institutions of government. In addition to work on acequia governance, this person will also work with acequias to address challenges related to protecting land and water rights, addressing long-term drought and water scarcity, building climate resiliency, and recovering from fire and flood disasters.
The Acequia Outreach Coordinator will work as part of the Acequia Governance Project and will be responsible for providing one-on-one technical assistance to acequia elected officials, attending acequia meetings to give presentations, and responding to requests for assistance. This includes a significant amount of writing, research, and communication. This position will also involve the development of a series of interactive and participatory workshops and events that integrate information about water rights and governance with acequia traditional knowledge, culture, history, and art. Additionally, the Coordinator will play a key role in developing educational materials about acequias, water rights, water stewardship, agriculture, land and water, and cultural perspectives on water.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide technical assistance to acequia elected officials on a range of topics related to acequia governance, water rights, bylaws, easements, financial compliance, and other governance matters.
- Assist acequias with infrastructure planning including development of Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plans (ICIPs), completion of funding applications for federal and state funding programs, as well as support with project implementation and reporting of outcomes.
- Assist acequias with disaster recovery including support with immediate disaster response, interagency coordination on delivery of state and federal disaster programs, and ongoing support with multi-year recovery efforts.
- Support acequias with initiatives to adapt to drought, water scarcity, flooding, and other climate extremes through local, participatory projects to strengthen water-sharing agreements, to improve acequia infrastructure through regional collaborations, and to engage in collaborations with other partners on watershed restoration.
- Support the Acequia Governance team with case management, which includes case intake, documentation, monitoring of services provided and deliverables, and use of the NMAA database to generate reports for agencies and funders.
- Provide coordination of workshops and events for purposes of outreach and education to acequias on acequia governance including development of educational materials, management of registration, workshop logistics, and follow up activities.
- Assist with documentation and record keeping on the services provided to acequias, individual parciantes, stakeholders and youth for the preparation of reports for agencies and funders.
- Attend staff meetings and team meetings and assisting with other duties as needed.
Qualifications: NMAA is seeking a person with passion for acequias, land and water, culture, and food traditions who would make a good addition to our team.
- Experience and knowledge of acequia communities, their culture, and issues related to water and agriculture.
- Relevant experience in New Mexico in community advocacy or public service.
- Degree or training in relevant field or the equivalent of experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively to identify creative solutions to complex problems.
- Knowledge of and willingness to learn new skills, systems, and technologies.
- A commitment to environmental justice and to uplifting the voices of traditional, land-based communities.
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout the state for meetings and other events.
- English-Spanish bilingual ability.
- Ability to work flexible hours and weekends during peak activities.

Compensation:
- Salary starts at $45,000 but is negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.

Position Summary:
The NMAA is seeking a person who is passionate about acequias, water, food, and culture to serve as our Budget and Grants Manager. This position will be responsible for overall financial planning, budget development and monitoring, financial reports and analysis, overall bookkeeping, payroll, oversight of receivables and payables, and compliance with state and federal tax and legal requirements. The Budget and Grants Director will work under the direct supervision of the Executive Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare the annual budget and prepare budget reports for management and the board of directors.
- Complete reports for compliance with state and federal laws including those required by the Internal Revenue Service, the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, New Mexico Workforce Solutions, Office of the Attorney General, and the Secretary of State.
- Coordinate the annual financial audit by an independent certified public accountant and oversee all internal controls.
- Prepare narrative and financial reports for multiple grants and contracts with different reporting periods. This includes substantive work on state contracts and federal grants.
- Manage the procurement process for NMAA and management of contracts for various providers of professional services.
- Support NMAA’s Operations Director and accounting firm to manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll process including biweekly payments, employee benefits, and legal compliance.
- Coordinate with Operations Director to manage a filing system for accounts payable and receivables as well as files for grants, donations, vendors, and contractors.
- Support Executive Director to manage an investment portfolio for NMAA’s reserve funds based on input and guidance from the management and the board of directors.
- Attend staff meetings and team meetings and assisting with other duties as needed.
Requirements:
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the ability to generate a variety of financial reports.
- Experience with financial management and/or bookkeeping for non-profit organizations.
- Degree or training in relevant field or the equivalent of experience
- Strong written and communications skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to identify creative solutions to complex problems;
- Good computer skills and experience with Word, Excel, Google Mail, and various databases. Willingness to gain functional proficiency with Powerbase.
- Hybrid work, which includes work from home, work in NMAA’s Santa Fe office, and attendance of in person meetings statewide. Requires sitting at a computer for 4 to 8 hours per day.

Position Summary: The NMAA is seeking a person who is passionate about acequias, water, food, and culture to serve as our Communications Coordinator. The primary work of this position is to support communication with the statewide acequia community, members, supporters, donors, the general public, and policymakers. This person will work closely with the Executive Director to manage media inquiries and to coordinate the development of content for newsletters, blogs, educational materials, website, and social media. The position will also be responsible for managing NMAA’s membership/donor program, coordinating event registration and sponsorships, and maintaining the NMAA database. The position requires a person with strong writing skills who can develop content for diverse audiences and strong technical skills in using various communications platforms. This position works with all staff and programs and requires a collaborative disposition. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The purpose of this position to develop and implement strategies to communicate the importance and value of the acequia’s central role in communities, land and water protection, food production, and cultural identity.
- Develop and compile content and publish materials through our website, newsletters, educational materials, and social media.
- Create dynamic graphic designs for NMAA materials for NMAA events, workshops, or opportunities and work with contract graphic designers for larger projects such as newsletters, etc.
- Work closely with the Executive Director to develop earned media opportunities as well as to respond to media inquiries in a timely manner. Maintain/update an index of NMAA and acequia media coverage.
- Develop strategies, create materials, and execute outreach plans to retain and increase membership.
- Manage Powerbase, the NMAA database, which NMAA uses to manage membership, outreach, and event registration. Coordinate with the service provider, maintain and update the database, and train staff on use of the database.
- Manage outreach, registrations, and RSVPs for events including workshops, conferences, etc. and manage outreach for issue campaigns and action alerts using various communications platforms.
- Develop NMAA storytelling strategies to use multimedia (video, written, photo, audio) to tell the story of acequias and NMAA’s work.
- Develop a system to manage content used for communications and to archive photo and video documentation of NMAA’s work. This includes training activities for NMAA staff on use of the system.
- Attending staff meetings and assisting with other duties as needed.

Position Summary: The NMAA is seeking a person who is passionate about acequias, water, food, and culture to serve as Executive Assistant. The Executive Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and provides administrative and programmatic support to the management team. This position will play a vital role in the organization by 1) managing and screening incoming emails, phone calls, and mail, 2) assisting the management team in prioritizing incoming inquiries accordingly, and 3) tracking the timely responses to inquiries as needed. The Executive Assistant will also assist with office management duties and with specific projects as needed.
The ideal candidate for this position must be friendly, outgoing, and a willing to work on detailed tasks. The position requires excellent communication and writing skills, experience relevant to the position, extensive in person work, the ability to travel statewide, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team and community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist Executive Director with administrative tasks including managing phone and email messages, attending meetings, scheduling, and preparing meeting materials as well as drafting correspondence, proofreading documents, etc.
- Assist the Operations Director to manage the office filing system for accounts payable and receivables as well as files for grants, donations, vendors, and contractors.
- Manage incoming inquiries by phone, email, or in person requests for assistance using NMAA’s database. Serve as the first point of contact for individuals contacting NMAA in person or by phone.
- Attend meetings of staff, board, and committees and assist with notetaking as needed.
- Assist with managing information about membership, services, and donors to ensure effective tracking through the NMAA database software.
