After one cancelled gathering due to smoke from the Frijoles Fire, the smoke parted for a day and we were able to meet at one of our Sembradores farms in Vadito. Over the course of 4 hours, we had a small farm tour, prepped and seeded a field, had a soil blocking demonstration (a seed starting method where the soil is pressed into blocks and you seed into the block) and even had time to sit for a delicious homegrown and homemade meal.
Ellyx (our host) wanted to extend her garden for the fall and 2027 season. So we made rows, applied compost and chicken pellets, raked in a fall cover crop mix of winter rye, field peas, ryegrass, crimson clover, and hairy vetch, and covered it with straw. The next step is to pray for rain!

Please enjoy this beautiful reflection from Ellyx and her day with the Sembradores:
“Working with the Sembradores at my farm, which is really starting to look like a real farm, was deeply inspiring and exciting. Alone, the work would have taken me weeks. Their company, expertise, and sweetness made everything so easy. Sharing food and stories with them has empowered me to imagine how this space could continue to harbor community and learning in the future.
Outside of our work day, being a part of this program has been nothing short of life changing. Before starting this program, I had been given an extremely rigid picture of what farming was meant to look like. I felt afraid and incapable. Seeing all of the varying expertise, imagination, and cultivation throughout New Mexico this growing season has not only deepened my understanding of farming but strengthened trust in my own capabilities.”
The Sembradores program is nothing short of amazing- it’s growing the next generation of leaders and acequieros AND growing their confidence one day at a time.
