Los Sembradores in May

The Los Sembradores crew has participated in highly engaging and hands-on workshops over the past few weeks. Los Sembradores has come away with deep insights and nuanced details of the day to day of being a farmer and growing our food. Some of the highlights have included:

On May 27, 2026 our group took a quick deep dive into harvesting, washing, and packing techniques for vegetables. We also covered some important do’s and don’ts for produce intended for personal consumption versus produce being marketed and shared with the public.

Edward led a large portion of the workshop focused on farmer’s tools. He demonstrated how to properly use and care for a variety of different tools. He went on to illustrate how to sharpen each tool while advising Los Sembradores on why maintaining our tools is a best practice. (Just like your favorite knife…the sharper the tool, the easier the work… though we say that with caution!) His teaching went into several areas including how to replace handles, repair tools, as he discussed the best types of wood handles for high-impact work.

Last but not least, during our workshop, we covered two different types of compost tea. One is deeply rich and nutrient-dense but contains store-bought materials. The other is made entirely from resources found on the land, slowly fermented and then returned to the soil to feed and enrich it naturally. Both methods are effective and showcase the options available.

We also held a quick seed exchange and Los Sembradores were able to leave the workshop with a feeling of accomplishment as they heade back to their own gardens prepared for the final planting of the season.
